台北市長柯文哲7日前往金山金寶山參加鄭南榕殉道26周年追思紀念會，她上台致詞時表示，去年曾前往鄭殉道自焚的地點，還能聞到濃厚的燒焦味，「民主是靠許多人犧牲得來，不是從地上冒出來的」，台北市也將於明年4月7日舉辦相關紀念座談會，擴大追思鄭南榕。

柯文哲指出，當年鄭殉道時，他還是台大醫院的住院醫師，他當時就在想，為何有人會用那麼激烈的舉動來表達意見，直到去年他前往鄭殉道的地點緬懷，雖然當時「火場」隔了塊玻璃，他聞到濃厚的燒焦味，遙想當時的情境，走出來不發一語，之後便傳了簡訊給鄭遺孀葉菊蘭。

簡訊內容大抵為，台灣的民主是靠許多人犧牲得來的，並非憑空從天上掉下、或是從地上冒出來，他感謝鄭南榕的犧牲，也感謝他成為後代世人打拼民主的典範。

柯文哲說，台灣這30多年來關於民主、文化素養已經有很大進步，雖然不是「最好」，仍有待加強的地方，但民主之路並非一蹴可及，希望民眾能感受自由民主的珍貴後，繼續為台灣的前途打拼、努力。
